Apple & IBM Deliver First Wave of IBM MobileFirst for iOS Apps

Big Data Analytics & Security Capabilities Arrive on iPhone & iPad

CUPERTINO, California and ARMONK, New York - 10 Dec 2014: Apple and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today deliver the first wave of IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions in a new class of made-for-business apps and supporting cloud services that bring IBM’s big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone and iPad users in the enterprise. IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions are now available to enterprise customers in banking, retail, insurance, financial services, telecommunications and for governments and airlines, thanks to an unprecedented collaboration between Apple and IBM. IBM clients today announcing support for IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions include: Citi, Air Canada, Sprint and Banorte.
"What we’re delivering aims directly at the new quest of business — smart technologies that unlock new value at the intersection of big data and individual engagement,” said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Global Business Services. “Our collaboration combines IBM’s industry expertise and unmatched position in enterprise computing, with Apple’s legendary user experience and excellence in product design to lift the performance of a new generation of business professionals.”

“This is a big step for iPhone and iPad in the enterprise, and we can’t wait to see the exciting new ways organizations will put iOS devices to work," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The business world has gone mobile, and Apple and IBM are bringing together the world’s best technology with the smartest data and analytics to help businesses redefine how work gets done.”

In targeting key opportunities and priorities within industries, IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps take enterprise mobility a level deeper, helping employees access their company’s full capabilities wherever they interact with clients — faster, easier and more securely than ever before.

Built exclusively for iPhone and iPad, IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps are delivered in a secure environment, embedded with analytics and linked to core enterprise processes. The apps can be customized for any organization and easily deployed, managed and upgraded via cloud services from IBM specifically for iOS devices, with security across the data, app and device. This first suite of IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions are now available across multiple industries, with additional apps being continuously designed and developed:

  • Plan Flight (Travel and Transportation) addresses the major expense of all airlines -- fuel -- permitting pilots to view flight schedules, flight plans, and crew manifests ahead of time, report issues in-flight to ground crews, and make more informed decisions about discretionary fuel.
  • Passenger+ (Travel and Transportation) empowers flight crews to offer an unmatched level of personalized services to passengers in-flight – including special offers, re-booking, and baggage information.
  • Advise & Grow (Banking and Financial Markets) puts bankers on premise with their small business clients, with secure authorization to access client profiles and competitive analyses, gather analytics-driven insights to make personalized recommendations, and complete secure transactions.
  • Trusted Advice (Banking and Financial Markets) allows advisors to access and manage client portfolios, gain insight from powerful predictive analytics -- in the client's kitchen or at the local coffee shop, rather than the advisor's office -- with full ability to test recommendations with sophisticated modeling tools all the way to complete, secure transactions.
  • Retention (Insurance) empowers agents with access to customers’ profiles and history, including an analytics-driven retention risk score as well as smart alerts, reminders, and recommendations on next best steps and facilitation of key transactions like collection of e-signatures and premiums.
  • Case Advice (Government) addresses the issue of workload and support among caseworkers who are making critical decisions, one family or situation at a time, on the go. The solution adjusts case priorities based on real-time analytics-driven insights, and assesses risk based on predictive analysis.
  • Incident Aware (Government) converts an iPhone into a vital crime prevention asset, presenting law enforcement officers with real-time access to maps and video-feeds of incident locations; information about victim status, escalation risk, and crime history; and improved ability to call for back-up and supporting services.
  • Sales Assist (Retail) enables associates to connect with customer profiles, make suggestions based on previous purchases and current selections, check inventory, locate items in-store, and ship out-of-store items.
  • Pick & Pack (Retail) combines proximity-based technology with back-end inventory systems for transformed order fulfillment.
  • Expert Tech (Telecommunications) taps into native iOS capabilities including FaceTime for easy access to expertise and location services for route optimization to deliver superior on-site service, more effective issue resolution and productivity as well as improved customer satisfaction.

"Mobile innovations are driving profound impact on how Citi delivers superior client experiences, particularly those that extend our enterprise expertise all the way to the point of customer contact,” said Heather Cox, Chief Client Experience, Digital and Marketing Officer for Global Consumer Banking at Citi. “There’s terrific energy in our collaboration with IBM and Apple around the goal of equipping our professionals with mobile capability that will create new competitive advantage and enable us to re-imagine how we share our knowledge to improve the quality of life for our clients.

To supplement the IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps, the partnership between Apple and IBM offers business customers additional levels of capability integrated for enterprise mobility, including:

  • Mobile Platform and Enterprise Integration – Leveraging IBM’s global industry consulting expertise, client experience design and enterprise systems integration from analytics, workflow and cloud storage, to fleet-scale device management, security and integration. Enhanced mobile management includes a private app catalog, data and transaction security services, and productivity suite for all IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions. In addition to on-premise software solutions, all these services will be available on Bluemix—IBM’s development platform on the IBM Cloud Marketplace.
  • Supply, activate and manage – Streamlined end-to-end procurement, deployment and lifecycle management -- at scale; along with cloud solutions for enterprise security, device management, and data and process integration. IBM Global Financing leasing options and services to allow organizations to keep pace with latest device releases.
  • AppleCare for the Enterprise  – Providing IT departments and end users with 24/7 assistance for their devices from Apple’s award-winning customer support group, with on-site service delivered by IBM.

IBM Positioned as a Mobile Application Development Platform Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant

ARMONK, N.Y. - 15 Sep 2014: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Gartner, Inc. has positioned IBM as a Leader in the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Mobile Application Development Platforms.1

For the report, Gartner evaluated the IBM MobileFirst application development portfolio that includes a complete range of tools for developers to create, deploy, manage and secure mobile apps, on-premise or in the cloud.

According to Gartner, “Leaders must represent a strong combination of ability to execute and completeness of vision. In the mobile application development platform (MADP) sector, this means that Leaders not only are good at cross-platform development, deployment and management across the full life cycle, but also have good vision of the multichannel enterprise, support for multiple architectures and standards, a solid understanding of IT requirements, and scalable channels and partnerships. Leaders must provide platforms that are easy to purchase, program, deploy and upgrade, and which can connect to a range of back-end and cloud services, from the same vendor as well as third parties.”

A key component of the IBM MobileFirst portfolio, IBM recently announced several enhancements to the IBM Worklight platform to address the evolving needs of mobile app developers, including those increasingly incorporating analytics and cloud-based services to quickly build and deploy mobile apps. Other major components of the IBM MobileFirst portfolio include integrated software and services for mobile management, payments, security and engagement.

"The need for mobile apps that maximize the user experience and spur transactions is exploding. With that rising demand, organizations need to rapidly build, secure, manage and integrate those mobile apps with their back-end systems to drive better decision making," said Phil Buckellew, vice president, enterprise mobile, IBM. "We feel this recognition reinforces how IBM is redefining the mobile application development platform and putting a rich set of tools and cloud-based services into the hands of the world’s developers so they can focus on creating exceptional interactions.”

IBM Worklight allows enterprises to optimize mobile user experiences by supporting both native (via
SDKs) and hybrid development models as well as tracking user experience with sentiment analysis and crowd-sourced feedback submissions. The platform helps developers integrate analytics, workflow and back-end systems, and ensure greater enterprise security and version management. IBM Worklight features mobile management and security capabilities for scanning apps to identify vulnerabilities early in development cycles and assist with determining problems with apps that have already been deployed.

Earlier this year, the IBM MobileFirst portfolio was recognized as a Leader in both the 2014 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Managed Mobility Services (MMS)2 and the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management Suites.3

The landmark partnership aims to redefine the way work will get done, address key industry mobility challenges and spark true mobile-led business change—grounded in four core capabilities:

  • a new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions including native apps, developed exclusively from the ground up, for iPhone and iPad;

As part of the exclusive IBM MobileFirst for iOS agreement, IBM will also sell iPhones and iPads with the industry-specific solutions to business clients worldwide.

“iPhone and iPad are the best mobile devices in the world and have transformed the way people work with over 98 percent of the Fortune 500 and over 92 percent of the Global 500 using iOS devices in their business today,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “For the first time ever we’re putting IBM’s renowned big data analytics at iOS users’ fingertips, which opens up a large market opportunity for Apple. This is a radical step for enterprise and something that only Apple and IBM can deliver.”

“Mobility—combined with the phenomena of data and cloud—is transforming business and our industry in historic ways, allowing people to re-imagine work, industries and professions,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and CEO. “This alliance with Apple will build on our momentum in bringing these innovations to our clients globally, and leverages IBM’s leadership in analytics, cloud, software and services. We are delighted to be teaming with Apple, whose innovations have transformed our lives in ways we take for granted, but can’t imagine living without. Our alliance will bring the same kind of transformation to the way people work, industries operate and companies perform.”

Webinar Replay: Game of Phones

Recorded Thursday, May 1, 2014 | 2 pm ET / 11 am PT

The battle for the one ruler of mobility has been ravishing the land for years. As three powerful families of devices battle to usurp the others with larger screens, faster processors and more features, it has left the kingdom in great turmoil on who they should trust as the most benevolent ruler of productivity.

Join Fiberlink as Medieval Mobile MaaSters for Apple, Android and Windows clash to determine which device family will sit upon the silicon throne.

Apple: Lord Andrew Clarke: Like the Lannisters, Apple is the current leader of Enterprise mobility with the most devices activated in business and schools. With its beloved features, apps, usability, and expanding device options, the iOS platform seems fit to rule for years to come. But it remains to be seen just how far Apple can extend its empire across the continents.

Android: Sir Frank Schloendorn: This Targaryen like mobile OS may not be the obvious choice, but the device diversity that was once keeping Android in exile has turned into a powerful battle arsenal. Devices and features found in the Samsung KNOX family line could very well be a mammoth dragon of power in pushing further inside the enterprise garden walls.

Windows: Squire Sergiy Mimkha: Windows like the Starks has taken quite a few battle scars in the battle for mobility. Now though with the power of Windows Phone 8 and the seamless connectivity to Office365 and portals of parchment sharing like SharePoint, Windows is poised to march from the great Northwest to show they are a force to be reckoned with.

Take your seat in the jousting arena today to see who will be the one OS to rule them all (and yes, we have no shame in mixing our medieval metaphors).

Five Reasons Why #Mobile is Here to Stay

Post originally published on IBM's Mobile Business Insights Blog on 4.14.14 by Piyush YadavTweet out to Piyush @tweetPiyushY or visit IBMMobileFrontier for more interesting discussions on mobile.
____________________________________________________________________________

Life and technology are moving at a rapid pace, and today in this throwaway society products get replaced more quickly than ever. Desktops, which were the machines of the future, are now considered a thing of the past. Corded phones got replaced by hands-free phones, which in turn were supplanted by mobile phones.
So are mobile devices also expendable?
I don’t think so, and here are five reasons why:
  1. The influx of mobile into business is not limited to smartphones or handheld devices but has spread into many sectors and technologies including robotics, sensors Mobile appsand manufacturing.
  2. Mobile devices are the preferred portal to the World Wide Web. Thanks to mobile devices, finding and sharing information is always at your fingertips.
  3. Mobile can be a complete package, providing entertainment, education and navigation—all of this supplemented by the ease of use, making mobile a very versatile gadget.
  4. Mobile devices are already treasured by so many people because of the ease with which they can be personalized. Users are likely to remain attached to their favorite mobile devices and to expect even more capabilities in them as we move into the future.
  5. The Internet of Things (IoT), although comprising mainly machine-to-machine (M2M) devices, still relies on the mobile device as a single handheld console that can act both as a dashboard and as a controller.
One may argue about wearable devices being the successors to mobile, but if you think about it, they are just an extension of the mobile device and applications. They provide limited and specific features just like an app does. Through wearable devices mobile again looks to be a clear winner.
Mobile evolution
In a nutshell, with social and cloud as key players in the mobile arena, the mobile era is just blooming, and after first-quarter 2014 we can say that the mobile canvas is fresh, and we have just started painting it with colors like #NodeRed and #BlueMix.
Check out these top 20 mobile growth statistics by Tom Vassos, which reasserts my point of view that mobile is here to stay.
The future can, indeed, bring changes in terms of mobile design and features, but the day that mobile gets replaced with something else won’t be anytime soon.
The mobile wave is not going away, so get your programming surfboards and ride the tide.
Can you envision a world without mobile devices?

Case Study: IBM On-boards 15,000 Devices the First Day after Deploying MaaS360 Mobile Device Management Software

Copyright 2014 IBM Corporation

The IBM CIO Office drives change, innovation and efficiency within the enterprise by helping ensure that the company’s IT operations are responsive, resilient and secure enough to keep pace with ongoing changes in technology and business requirements.

Advancing mobile device security

The CIO Office manages about one hundred-thousand IBM employees’ smartphones and tablets. Not only must it provide these employees with mobile flexibility, it also needs to ensure that these mobile device assets are adequately protected. Achieving these objectives required the office to deliver more than basic mobile device management; it needed to provide advanced mobile application and access security as well as expanded levels of mobile capabilities. Moreover, the CIO Office wanted to deploy these capabilities to 90,000 devices within one month, at a low cost.

Cloud- based mobile management and security

The CIO Office deployed the cloud-based MaaS360 by Fiberlink, an IBM company, mobile device management solution to speed adoption among the over one hundred-thousand IBM mobile users and reduce risk for IBM. Plans include deploying a MaaS360 built-in application security layer, which will allow the software to encrypt and authenticate each user and each application as it is deployed. The device management capabilities of MaaS360, Gartner Magic Quadrant leader, will help IBM easily distribute, update and manage these applications throughout their lifecycle.
Speeding deployment and reducing risk

By using MaaS360 software on the cloud, the CIO organization rapidly extends unprecedented security and mobile device management capabilities to IBM and its mobile users. “We were on-boarding devices on MaaS360 five days after the close of acquisition—15,000 on the first day and over 30,000 in the first week,” says Bill Tworek, executive IT architect for CIO Office. He notes that, to-date, nearly 70,000 IBMers have self-enabled their smartphones and tablets with MaaS360. “It took us less than 3 days to integrate MaaS360 into the IBM architecture and by moving from an on-premises model to a cloud model we’ll save USD 500,000.”

PRESS RELEASE: IBM Placed in Leaders Quadrant by Leading Analyst Firm for IBM MobileFirst

ARMONK, N.Y. - 12 Aug 2013: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Gartner has positioned IBM as a Leader in the Magic Quadrant for Mobile Application Development Platforms.

The new report places IBM in the Leaders Quadrant, as measured by completeness of vision and execution ability of IBM Worklight, IBM’s mobile application development platform. Acquired by IBM in February 2012, IBM Worklight is a member of the IBM MobileFirst family of solutions. In just one year, IBM has advanced from the Niche Quadrant to the Leaders Quadrant.

Today's announcement follows a string of strong showings for IBM MobileFirst services and software capabilities, including IBM Worklight, in Gartner Magic Quadrants this summer. In July, IBM was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Security Testing. IBM is also named a visionary in Magic Quadrants for Managed Mobility Services and Mobile Device Management.

According to the report, as this market reaches early mainstream status, Gartner expects Leaders to be profitable, and to present lower risk and consistently high project results as the market begins to consolidate and competition grows. Leaders must not only be good at cross-platform development and deployment, but also have a good vision of the multichannel enterprise, support for standards, a solid understanding of IT requirements, and scalable channels and partnerships to market. Leaders must provide platforms that are easy to purchase, program, deploy and upgrade. Leaders can focus primarily on either business-to-consumer or business-to-enterprise, but vision and execution scores are higher for vendors that can cover both use cases today.

“IBM MobileFirst, which includes IBM Worklight, represents the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of services and software to help clients benefit from the emerging mobile economy,” said Phil Buckellew, vice president, IBM Mobile Enterprise. “Today, with 90 percent of mobile users keeping their device within arm’s reach 100 percent of the time, businesses need assurance that mobile apps can be deployed instantly and across a range of mobile devices including iOS and Android phones and tablets. This is where IBM Worklight and the IBM MobileFirst portfolio excel.”

Colmobil drives greater customer service and improved efficiency with new mobile app

As part of this news, IBM is announcing that Colmobil, a leading automotive company in Israel, sole representative of Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and Mitsubishi, is using IBM MobileFirst solutions to boost efficiency and improve customer service. From garages to waiting rooms, Colmobil’s new mobile app unlocks the data stored in its systems and makes it accessible for employees and customers from any mobile device, including smartphones, tablets, display screens and kiosks.

Using the new app, mechanics, team leaders and department managers can easily view progress of every vehicle the company is servicing and make better informed decisions to improve workflow. In addition, customers are provided real-time information regarding status of vehicle treatment from LCD screens in the waiting room or on the go via mobile devices.

“By teaming with IBM MobileFirst, we are now able to bring meaningful data to the right people, anytime, anywhere and in an easy to navigate format,” said Gil Katz, vice president of business technology, Colmobil. “With this mobile initiative, we have succeeded in our goal to revamp both the customer and employee experience. Not only have we increased the ratio of vehicles that are ready at the time promised to customers, we’ve also been able to improve mechanics on the workshop floor.”

Using IBM Worklight, Colmobil was able to build a single mobile computing platform that eliminated the complexity of various business processes, devices and operating systems. The mobile solution also provides Colmobil with a highly integrated and secure platform that allows for flexibility in a fast moving technology market.
